As part of our ShAFF Fringe Festival we're going to be running a series of what we're calling ShED talks. In a nod to the popular TED Talks these are going to follow a similar format, short talks from a wide variety of speakers on subjects that they know passionately. They might be about a particular area of expertise or a cause that they feel strongly about that might need additional support or even a pitch for an up and coming project or planned expedition.

The aim is to provide a platform for people within the outdoor and adventure industry to speak to a captive and interested audience. The talks will be recorded and then published on ShAFF's YouTube channel, providing the talker with a tool to gain a bigger audience online for their cause.

This year is the start of this element of the festival, so the programme is lighter than we expect to have in the future, but we hope it will generate enough interest to allow us to grow this next year and have a much wider programme.

If you're interested in speaking yourself this year or next then get in touch with a quick review of what you'd like to talk about and we'll look into getting you involved.  ***We have 10 minute slots available for this session***

Cressida Allwood

Cycling Round the World

Starting in Pakistan and finishing in Quito nearly 2 years later, Cress cycled around much of the world, mainly solo. She delivers motivational talks about her bike trip with humour and humility: 21 countries – too many punctures and endless kindness from strangers. A truly incredible escapade with huge highs and lows. Join her for 10 minutes of heart-warming and adventurous tales from the saddle.

As an expedition leader, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Ambassador for Bramwell International Cress regularly travels, tests kit and advocates for adventure - providing balance and contrast to her ‘day job’ as a leadership coach and trainer.

Ellie Fuller

Scottish Mountaineering for poor, hungry beginners.

Ellie Fuller is climber, writer and student based in Leicester. She loves all types of climbing, and is always up for the next adventure, be that grit cracks, Italian big-walling, or Scottish winter. When not out on the rock, she works as a climbing instructor and coach and loves to write about climbing and adventure.

The mountains, the cold, the snow, the raw sense of adventure… Scottish winter climbing holds an extraordinary and undeniable lure. Yet for many, lack of experience and knowledge makes it daunting and dangerous, while the costly affair that it can easily become presents another barrier.

As an average climber with no previous winter experience and a student with no cash, Ellie suggests it is entirely possible to get out there as a ‘punter on a shoe-string.’  Hopefully this will give more people the psych and the know-how to safely get out there into the snowy mountains for a real adventure!
